A Digital Playground

Ongoing research into digital matter, virtual sculpting and speculative objects
2023 - 2024 - 2025 - 2026
Virtual sculpting, digital modelling, mixed reality design, rendering, digital fabrication, material research

A Digital Playground is an ongoing research project in which Ralf Gloudemans explores digital matter, virtual sculpting and speculative object-making. The project functions as a space for experiments, studies and outcomes that do not always begin with a fixed physical destination.

And yet, it needs a place within the practice precisely because of the role that play has in digital craftsmanship. It creates room to understand digital fabrication and design processes, while also allowing Ralf to step back into a position of not fully understanding them yet. In that space, play, failure, exploration and uncertainty become essential parts of progress.

Within this research, the digital environment is not treated as a sketching tool alone, but as an autonomous studio. Forms can be carved, stretched, duplicated, distorted and assembled in ways that are not immediately bound to gravity, material resistance or traditional production logic. This freedom allows objects to emerge through intuition, movement and play.

The project brings together multiple directions: virtual sculptures, spatial studies, digital objects, material translations, renders, prototypes and experiments that may later develop into physical works. Some outcomes remain fully digital, while others become starting points for ceramics, furniture, light objects, public-space proposals or mixed-reality installations.

As an ongoing project, A Digital Playground is less a single series than a growing field of possibilities. It shows how Ralf’s practice develops before a work becomes final: through testing, wandering, failing, reshaping and discovering. The project gives space to the digital soul of the work before it fully enters the physical world.
