EVOLVE explores how the craft of traditional furniture making can evolve through the integration of digital techniques. Using Virtual Reality, Ralf Gloudemans creates hands-on digital designs that are subsequently materialised in the physical world.
The project begins with an exploration of artisanal carving in classic furniture pieces: a craft tradition in which surface, ornament and structure are shaped by hand. Within EVOLVE, these references are not copied, but carefully translated into a contemporary context. Ralf acts as a bridge between past and present, between traditional craftsmanship and digital form-making.
In the virtual environment, the project takes on a new dimension. Classical forms and carving techniques are interpreted as digital matter, allowing Ralf to push the boundaries of traditional furniture design while preserving the essence of artisanal craftsmanship. The cabinet becomes a meeting point between familiar furniture typology and a digitally sculpted skin.
The virtual design is then brought into physical reality through computer-controlled production processes, material construction and finishing. The result is a synthesis: an object that carries the warmth and character of hand-carved furniture, while also embodying the precision, distortion and innovation of digitally driven production.
EVOLVE is not a rejection of traditional craft, but a transformation of it. The work shows how digital tools can become part of a contemporary craft practice, creating a physical object with a digital soul.
