Transcending: Mesh to Matter

Where digital sculpting becomes ceramic presence
2023
Casted earthenware, engobe, transparent matte glaze, VR sculpting

Transcending: Mesh to Matter explores the intersection of digital technology and physical craft from the perspective of the maker. The project begins with references gathered from the physical world, but is shaped within a digital environment. Using virtual reality, 3D mesh models are sculpted, adjusted and refined until a distinctive digital-physical language begins to emerge.

The resulting ceramic vessels carry traces of both worlds. Their forms are digitally born, but their surfaces, weight and presence are grounded in the material reality of ceramics. Casted earthenware, engobe and transparent matte glaze bring the virtual gestures into contact with clay, moulds, firing and hand finishing.

Rather than treating digital tools as a shortcut to production, Transcending: Mesh to Matter approaches them as part of a contemporary craft process. The digital environment becomes a place for movement, intuition and sculptural decision-making. The physical object becomes the moment where those gestures are fixed in matter.

The series pays tribute to the importance of handcrafted objects while opening up a space for what becomes possible when virtual and physical realms meet. Each vessel exists somewhere between artefact, functional object and sculpture: a physical object with a digital soul.
